Police are appealing for witnesses after a man has been left critically ill following a serious collision in Belle Vue.

Shortly after 2.45am on Sunday 18 March police were called to a collision involving two cars at the junction of Pottery Lane and Hyde Road in Belle Vue.

Officers attended and found that a dark coloured Audi A3 and a gold Rover 75 had collided. The Audi had then collided with barriers on the central island at the junction.

A 28-year-old man, who had been travelling in the Audi, suffered serious head injuries and a broken back. He was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains in a critical condition.

The two other passengers in the Audi were not injured. The two occupants in the Rover suffered minor injuries.
The Audi had been travelling along Pottery Lane heading north towards Hyde Road and the Rover was driving along Hyde Road away from the city centre.

A 36-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. They have both been bailed until May 2012 pending further inquiries.

Police Constable Danny Byrne from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “A man has been left critically ill following this incident in the early hours of Sunday morning and officers are investigating to establish the exact circumstances leading up to this.

“It is believed that the Audi had overtaken a car stopped at traffic lights at the junction shortly before the collision. We are eager to speak to the occupants of this car and to anyone that may have witnessed what happened.”

Any witnesses are asked to call the Road Policing Unit directly on 0161 856 4741 or call 101.
